We're Moving!

Well, sort of. The Pollard Memorial Library recently launched its new web site. In addition to a new design, the new web site now houses the Pollard Memorial Library's Autism Resource Guide. As such, this blog will no longer be maintained or updated. Instead, I will be updating it on the library's web site. It's the same information, just in a different format. To access the Autism Resource Guide via the library's web site, click here. Make sure to bookmark it!

1 in 110: Autism Spectrum Resources for Families

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 110 children in the United States is on the autism spectrum. Youth Services Staff has compiled a list of autism spectrum resources for families. The best place to start, if you suspect your child might be on the spectrum, is to have your child screened. The earlier your child starts therapies, the better. If your child is under age three there are two local agencies, South Bay Early Intervention and Thom Anne Sullivan Center, that provide screening services. If your child is age three or older, contact the Lowell Public Schools for assistance.

Information contained in this blog does not constitute library endorsement of a treatment, agency or advocacy group. The library maintains that it is up to the parent/legal guardian to determine proper treatment for his/her child. This blog is solely a place of information for the huge array of materials related to Autism Spectrum Disorders.

If your family uses a service or has a favorite autism spectrum website that is not listed, please let us know so we can share with others in the community. Contact Molly Hancock, Coordinator of Youth Services at mhancock@mvlc.org.

This year's event will focus on Autism Technology but you will also be able to get information on: · how to get your insurance to cover ABA under the new autism law (and how to figure out whether the law applies to your insurance company)· how to get in-home therapy for your family, a family partner for yourself, and a therapeutic mentor for your child through the Children's Behavioral Heath Initiative if your child is eligible· your concerns and questions about special education law and autism· Asperger's-specific information, services, and programs· a wide variety of Boston-area autism resources for your child and your family· autism research studies your family can participate in· social skills programming and parent training opportunities· and more!

Here is some of the cutting-edge technology (many of it under $10!) that you will learn about at the fair:· An app that helps you track your child's meltdowns and gives you information on how to prevent them from happening in the future· Wearable tracking equipment that you can activate if your child wanders, returning them home to you in minutes· In-pocket technology that gives your child who has difficulty speaking a voice, wherever he/she is· An app that helps a child understand their emotions and learn how to regulate them· Devices that assist with organization, education, and leisure time activates· And much more!

In addition, one of our exhibitors is launching new apps focusing on sleeping, toileting, and other activities of daily living and is looking for parent volunteers to test them at home for FREE to provide feedback so COME EARLY to sign up!! Also, if you are able to stay, there will be a fantastic presentation at noon titled "Future Technology for Autism: Emotion and Sensory Processing" in the auditorium next to the lobby by MIT Professor Dr. Rosalind Picard, Director of MIT's Autism Technology Initiative www.media.mit.edu/research/autism-communication-technology-initiative.
